Singer, performer, a complete artist, but also a woman, activist and mother, transgressive, a deeply romantic and sensitive soul, Gianna Nannini is the essence of rock that escapes any label, a free spirit that doesn’t accept conventions, who has never tried to adapt, to please, or to be something other than herself. Gianna has always been Gianna – and the world has always loved her (sometimes even criticized her) precisely for this.

Her androgynous style, which challenges traditional canons of femininity, her biting and powerful voice, and a magnetic stage presence, has allowed her building a unique music repertoire over years, a perfect mix of strength and fragility, grit and poetry, accompanied by vocals that can be powerful and vulnerable at the same time, really outstanding in the world of discography in early 80s, dominated by men, imposing herself as an icon in the music landscape that rarely makes room for such complex personalities, perhaps also so divisive.

It is therefore no coincidence that her career, which has lasted for over 40 years – the first successful single was “America”, a powerful and provocative anthem of rebellion, released in 1979 – has seen powerful and pressing songs such as “Bello e impossibile” from 1986 and “softer” melodies like“Profumo”, in which sensuality and poetry blend together for music and lyrics just as powerful as liberating.

But also true “hymns” like “Fotoromanza”, winner of 1984’s Festivalbar, a (successful) attempt to mock typical atmospheres of photo novels, very popular at the time, highlighting the stereotypes of love songs, and certainly her timeless hits, such as “Meravigliosa creatura”, released for the first time on the radio on January 1, 1995, but achieving a real consecration only in 2012, driven by a famous commercial that “adopted” it as a soundtrack.

“Contradictions” can also be reflected in her life path. As a mother, she made brave choices, challenging conventions and prejudices: she had her daughter Penelope at 56, showing that there are no ages or social limits to maternal love and even today, at 70 (on June 14, 2024), she keeps giving voice to what’s closest to her heart, like civil rights and the fight against ageism and gender prejudice.
