The tournaments are organized by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), an association that brings together professional male tennis players from around the world. The association took form in 1972 by the initiative of Donald Dell, Jack Kramer, and South African Cliff Drysdale who were also the first presidents of the organization. The ATP also has a female equivalent with the acronym WTA (Women Tennis Association).

The association’s focus is to protect the player’s interests regarding the various aspects of the activity and the organization of a circuit and a world ranking that takes the name of ATP.

The ATP ranking is based on the results obtained in the last 52 weeks (1 year) and the points won by the players during a tournament are valid only for that specific period. After the year, the points are subtracted and eventually replaced by the new points earned.

This system allows one to have a mobile ranking based on the current value of individual players and is updated weekly.

There are 26 players who since 1973, the year in which ATP introduced this world ranking, have managed to reach the first position. Among the most famous the is:

  • Novak Đjoković, aka Nole: the current number one in the world won the podium on 3rd of February 2020
