Smoothies: what are they, how are they prepared and what are their properties?
Smoothies: the healthy drink made popular by its tasty flavour and beneficial properties
Discovering delicious and healthy drinks to fill up on energy and well-being.
Easy to prepare, tasty, light and rich in beneficial properties, smoothies are popular among fans of health food and rightly so: they are full of fibre and vitamins, they are low on calories but are really nutritious.
The term “smoothie” comes from the English “smooth” which means “velvety, soft and creamy”. In practice, these are a mix of blended vegetable and fruit drinks to which you can add water, soy, almond milk, or yoghurt. Sugar, on the other hand, is not included in the recipes.
There are various types of smoothies: vegetable-based, fruit classics and so-called “detox smoothies” that help purify the body. We must consider that five servings of fruit and vegetables should be consumed daily, a quantity that is not easy to achieve for some.
Smoothies are, therefore, a valuable help to increase the amount of fruit and vegetables consumed daily. They are easy to take with you to work, school, during daily commitments and free time. In addition, they improve skin health, promote intestinal function, reduce triglycerides, and facilitate mental activity.
But that’s not all: they are really delicious and help to stay hydrated by counteracting the unpleasant effects of a lack of liquids such as fatigue, headaches, and difficulty concentrating. They allow you to have healthier meals avoiding fatty and caloric foods and, if associated with regular physical exercise and a low-calorie diet, they can help achieve a healthier body and mind.
There are many preparations based on a mix of fruit and vegetables but everyone can choose the ingredients they prefer.
The healthier versions will consist of one part water, one part fruit and three parts fresh vegetables. The process is very simple: simply choose the ingredients, vegetables and fruits, and blend them with the immersion blender.
To increase their beneficial effects on the body, the best time to drink smoothies is in the morning, on an empty stomach, at least an hour before ingesting solid foods.
