Environmental education: how to teach children to respect nature?

Raising awareness among the new generations and promoting virtuous behavior are the objectives of environmental education, which is fundamental for the citizens of tomorrow.

Environmental education plays a key role in the growth of children. In fact, it teaches them the value of sustainability and the protection of resources. But also how to contribute to the protection of our planet through small actions that can make a difference.

Furthermore, promoting contact with nature has beneficial effects on the health of body and mind. According to the WWF, in fact, spending time in nature restores the psychophysical balance stressed by city life. It also positively influences the brain and emotional development of kids.

The largest world organization working in defense of the environment emphasizes the numerous factors that are improved or developed when kids are in nature. From psycho-physical well-being to sociability, from concentration to creativity, up to stress management and sense of community.

So, spending more time outdoors is good for children’s health and helps them get to know the surrounding world. However, a few hours in nature are not enough to learn to respect the environment. Indeed, a constant and daily teaching is necessary to make children understand that everyone can make their contribution against climate change.

Save the Children, one of the most important independent international organizations that promotes and protects the rights of children and adolescents, gives some suggestions for teaching them environmental education:

• Explain to them the importance of recycling. Show them how to correctly separate waste and involve them in such activities;
• Approach the issue of environmental impact by watching at documentaries together. You can also read articles or books that teach how to reduce waste as little as possible;
• If you have a garden, a terrace or a balcony, teach them to cultivate a small vegetable garden. Yo can discover together the life cycle of plants and stimulate curiosity and empathy towards plant and animals. Furthermore, playful activities offered by educational gardens allow kids to learn the principles of environmental and food education;
• Choose sustainable mobility, such as bicycle. Turn off the lights when leaving a room or turn off the water while brushing teeth. But also adjust thermostats together or make the Volta’s battery can teach kids to reduce wastefulness;
• Cook together vegetable-based dishes which have less environmental impact. Take walks in the park and collect leaves, flowers and seeds to study once back home to discover new and fascinating secrets about the complexity of nature;
• Use as little plastic as possible. Prefer reusable water bottles to supermarket bottles. When shopping, STC suggests, to read the information on packaging to kids and explain why it is important to choose products with a low environmental impact.

Forte Village educational garden: the green activities for children

During the visit the young guests will be supervised by the Forte Village staff. In addition to speaking Italian, English, French, German and Russian, the staff attended the first aid course provided by the Italian Society of Medicine of the Pediatric Center of Cagliari.
