Fabian Cancellara: the biography of a cycling champion

Born on the 18th of March 1982 in the Swiss municipality Wohlen bei Bern near Canton Berna, Fabian Cancellara used to be a professional cyclist nicknamed the Locomotive of Berna or Spartacus.

He is specialized in races against the clock of which he was world champion in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010 plus twice in the junior category and twice a winner at the Olympic Games in 2008 and 2016. He is also specialized in one-day races and short stage races.

His palmarès also includes one edition of Milano-Sanremo in 2008, three victories at the Tour of Flanders (2010, 2013, 2014), three at the Paris-Roubaix (2006, 2010, 2013), one at Tirreno-Adriatica (2008), one Tour de Suisse (2009), three appearances at Tour de France and three more at Vuelta a España.

His passion for cycling started at the age of thirteen when he found a bike in the garage of his father Donato, for which he put aside his interest in football.

In the junior category, he tried track cycling and cyclocross, but it is on the road that he achieved his most important goals: he won the gold medal of the timed trials by category at the World Championships in Valkenburg in 1998 and later in Verona in 1999. In 2000 he was first on the podium at the thirty-seventh edition of the Gran Premio Palio of Recioto, in 2001 he was in the category of professionals with the Italian Mapei-Quick Step cycling team and won 11 races including the Grand Prix Eddy Merckx and the Swiss championship.

In 2003 Cancellara won the timed trial at Tour de Romandie and Tour de Suisse.

During the decade between 2004 and 2014, he made appearances in many cycling ceremonies, allowing him to achieve important goals and victories like that of Tour de France where he wore the yellow t-shirt for two days, also third place at the timed trial for the world championship in Madrid, his victory at Roubaix, the Giro of Denmark and the cycling World Cup in Salzburg. He had another triumphant race at the ninety-sixth edition of Milano-Sanremo, the gold medal at the Olympics in Beijing, a triumph at Tour Oman, Tour de Flanders and the world championship in Melbourne.

These are just a few examples of the success that makes Cancellara a sports legend.

In 2016, after a problematic season in 2015, the sportman announced his retirement during the occasion of the Swiss Cycling Awards.
