Triathlon: IRONMAN® 70.3 Sardinia 2022 at Forte Village

Forte Village is the award-winning resort surrounded by the beautiful blue waters of the Sardinian sea. Now the resort is preparing to host the second leg in Italy of the most prestigious international triathlon competition. We are talking about the IRONMAN® 70.3® Sardinia on October 23, 2022.

Ironman is the name of the longest and most difficult version of triathlon, a sport that combines three aerobic disciplines: swimming, cycling and running. These disciplines are performed in succession, without interruption.

Triathlon is both an individual and team (relay) multidisciplinary sport born in 1977 from a bet between a group of friends on a beach in Honolulu, the capital of Oahu (Hawaii). They were discussing which was the toughest race in terms of endurance: the Waikiki Rough Water Swim (3.8 km), the Bike Race around Oahu (180 km) or the Honolulu Marathon (42.195 km).

One of the friends was John Collins, commander of the US Navy, who suggested to combine the three sporting events. He also suggested to call Ironman whoever managed to finish first the entire race. Thus was born the triathlon, although Collins, later, declared: “I got a really good laugh at the time!”.
14 competitors took part at the first edition, won by Gordon Haller. Among them, one bought the bike the day before the race and another stopped for a refreshing break at Mc Donald’s while racing.

Since 2000, after the approval of the Comité International Olympique (IOC), triathlon has been an Olympic specialty, both for men and women. Furthermore, in 2021 the team relay competition with the mixed formula (2 men and 2 women) was introduced.

Triathlon IRONMAN® 70.3: an unmissable event in a unique location

The ‘World Triathlon’ international sports federation defines the Ironman as super long distance triathlon. This is one of the toughest sports, a real challenge which requires excellent athletic preparation and great psychophysical endurance.

After Cervia, the Forte Village Resort is the second stop in Italy of this triathlon competition. The athletes will start with a 1.9km swim at the resort’s beautiful beach. It is a single clockwise ride in the turquoise and crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Then, the competition will continue with the bike race (87.4 km) along some of the most beautiful places in Southern Sardinia. Among these, the famous red rocks of the hinterland and the white cliffs of the coastline. Lastly, the two-ring foot run (21.1 km) that connects Forte Village with the coast of Santa Margherita di Pula with the Saracen tower, symbol of Cala d’Ostia.
